A Love/Hate Relationship

About ten years ago any savvy, forward thinking person could have seen the social media boom coming. However, I doubt many would have seen the complete takeover it has become.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of things I love about modern technology and the new social media. I love;

  • Keeping conversations short by texting or tweeting instead of talking on the phone
  • Discovering long lost friends through Facebook
  • Setting up church events and other events and getting the word out to the masses
  • Inviting tons of people (all at once) to come hear the good news about Jesus Christ!
  • Gathering prayer support from all over the world with the click of a button

But there are AT LEAST five things I hate as well and several of them look eerily similar to the things I love! I hate;

  • Keeping conversations short by texting or tweeting instead of talking on the phone
  • Having long lost “friends” find you on Facebook
  • See cheesy church events and ads displayed all over the place
  • Seeing so many use Twitter and Facebook as vehicles for gossip and slander
  • Gathering support for ungodly and even dangerous groups

So it would seem that the advance of social media is both a good thing and a bad thing but one thing remains…social media itself.

For better or worse, it ain’t going anywhere.

The Sunday Evening Mind Dump!

  • Today we began a brand new series entitled, “The Bible.” It closely follows the 5 part series with the same title from the History Channel airing Sunday evenings from 8:00 – 10:00 PM. The cable series actually started last weekend and ended up the most viewed cable show of the year thus far!

Millions seem to love it. At the same time, it does have its critics—sadly, many of them are the same Christians who ought to be supporting it. Among the complaints are that they (the producers) tried to cram too much into the 2 hour time slot for part 2, that they once again settled for mediocre actors and cut corners on crucial scenes, angels following human stereotypes and acting like ninjas, and that they made far too liberal use of green screening where it would have been relatively simple to get a more convincing landscape or natural backdrop. I’m not here to argue these critiques or to nominate the series for an Emmy—I’m far more interested in one thing—using it to reach the lost for Christ. So, is this endeavor perfect? No. Are there things that could have been done better that perhaps hurt the credibility? Maybe. Whatever the cause, there is one thing that remains true—this aggressive undertaking has been and will continue to be bathed in prayer. And my prayer is for the expansion of God’s kingdom through a television series that is still being watched by millions!

  • I just found out that several people gave their lives to Christ in the last couple weeks! Though we always celebrate the BIG days, we need to remember that ALL of heaven rejoices each time even one sinner comes home! Today, we rejoice with them!
  • Next week we will begin registration for summer camp at Word of Life Island and Ranch! This promises to be a life changing week for our teenagers and a time well worth the price. Start saving now and for July 14th – 21st at Word of Life!

The Sunday Evening Mind Dump!

  • Beginning next week we will embark  upon one of the most exciting series EVER! In fact, thousands of churches all across the world will be encouraging their people to invite the lost to a “viewing party” and then to church to hear more about what they’ve seen about, “The Bible,” a brand new series on the History Channel starting tonight! We seriously need to invite like never before to this. Opportunities like this don’t come along very often and when they do it’s carpe diem! Look it up. Beginning next week we will start rolling out the invites, posters, Life Group ideas, viewing party tips and anything else we can think of to make it easier for all of us to invite. Now all that’s left is the big ASK. Invite like crazy, trusting God to do the rest. Every family needs to bring a family–trust God, it’s not that hard! And remember, 8 out of 10 people you invite this time of year WILL attend! It’s Easter season, the highest attended time of the whole year!
  • We wrapped up our 4 week, “Vintage Love” series today with a powerful video about the strength of keeping your vows and following through with commitments. Roy and Karen Sisk have a very impactful story of how God’s grace and forgiveness brought a second chance to both of them and made their marriage better than ever! You can listen to it on the podcast later tomorrow here.
  • Great to have Will and Charis Retherford with us today! They will join us several times before the end of May when they will be here for good. Be praying everything goes smoothly in this huge transition of their lives!
